While its possible to change a hard drive in any computer, it can be more difficult in some then others. I don’t know your specific computer well enough to say how hard it would be, but you would want to buy a new hard drive that fits your model and have all the files copied over exactly (including operating system) so that you can just drop the new hard drive in your computer and go. This isn’t easily done and will probably need to be done at a computer repair store or something like it.
My personal suggestion if you are willing to give it a try would be to use an external hard drive. I realize you said you didn’t want to bother with it, but its a quick fix and not very much of a hassle if you do it right. Simply buy a external hard drive such as a Western Digital. Make sure its an ultra portable, meaning no power supply needed. Then take Velcro circles or strips and place them on the bottom of the external hard drive. Place the opposite pieces of Velcro on the back of your laptops monitor. Connect the two, and then plug the external into your laptop. You can then grab your laptop at anytime and run out the door, bringing your external with you without even thinking since its connected anyways.
The advantages and disadvantages of my idea. The advantages would be that you don’t need to go through the hassle of installing a new hard drive in your laptop. Its also cheaper then installing a new one. The external can be upgraded to a larger one at any time without hassle. The disadvantages would be it adds a bit of weight to your laptop, the external drains your battery a bit faster, and it uses one usb port on your computer.

yes you can change the hard drive.
best way to do it is to take it to a computer repair shop or any retailer with a service center.
you will need to find out what type hard driveyou have. eg IDE or SATA. from memory
if you haven’t made recovery discs for your laptop, then make sure you do. if they came with recovery discs then make sure you have them.
when you put the new hard drive in, you will need to put your operating system back on, so then recovery discs are important.
even though you said you don’t want an external, what i would suggest you do is buy a empty 2.5" hard drive caddy and put your existing hard drive in it. once you’ve put the new hard drive in, and installed the OS, you can transfer any documents you had on the original HDD, onto the new one and this will also allow you to keep a backup copy of your files. i don’t suggest carrying the external one with the laptop. because the whole point of an external hdd is just in case something happens to your laptop, you’ll have a back up.
if you take it to a technician, then there will be installation fees. but then it will save you the time and you’ll know that it’s done properly.
